What Is Headwear in Minecraft?

Protective Headgear

• Character armor has been a part of the game since the early days of "Minecraft"; it is even obtainable in the Pocket Edition variant. You can craft helmets out of five pieces of leather, iron ingots, gold ingots, or diamonds in any version of the game. On the PC you will have to arrange them in a semi-circle with the open end facing the bottom of your screen. Each material has its own unique appearance and level of protection.

Advantages of Helmets

• Beyond any purely aesthetic value your helmet has, it will protect your head. That's a useful thing to have around no matter how you look at it. Each type of helmet has its own strength. The leather helmet will only get you .5 units of armor while you wear it. The gold, iron, and rarely obtained chain helmets will all get you 1 armor unit. The diamond helmet provides 1.5 units of armor.

Decorative Skins

• If you want to create something more unique and decorative to wear on your head, your only option is to edit your character skin. On the PC you can do so directly by uploading an appropriate image to your account profile through the "Minecraft" website. Users of the Xbox 360 have to pick up character skin DLC packs, many of which include options with goggles and assorted headwear.

Editing your PC Character Appearance

• Manually altering your character's appearance is simple once you have the default skin to work with. Log in to the "Minecraft" website and scroll down to the "Change how you look in Minecraft" section, which contains a link to the reference skin. Any new creation will have to be drawn in the same resolution with all body parts represented in the same areas for it to display properly in-game.
