Is There a Way to Transfer Games From One Steam Profile to Another?

The Steam digital distribution platform for purchasing and playing computer games has a variety of community features that make it easy to chat with other players and play online titles together. Once you have registered a game to your Steam account, there is no way to transfer the title to another profile. However, Steam does support gifting and trading for games stored in your inventory.
  1. Gifting

    • Gifting is the simplest method of transferring a game from one Steam profile to another, but requires that the game is not tied to your account yet. Click the "Add To Cart" option from the Steam store page, and then select the "Purchase as a gift" option when buying a game from Steam as a gift. Use the "Send my gift directly through Steam" option and select a person from your list of friends as a recipient for the game. Open your Steam inventory and select the "Send gift" option in order to transfer a game that you have previously purchased and stored in your inventory. The recipient receives a Steam notification that he has received a new game, which he can then redeem and add to his account.

    Trading

    • Another method of transferring a game to another Steam profile is by trading. In order to trade with someone, you must be logged in to your Steam account and add the person to your list of Steam friends. Click the down-arrow next to the username of the person with whom you want to trade, and then select the "Invite to Trade" option. The person must be online and accept your trade offer before you can initiate the process. Click and drag the games that you want to trade from your inventory to the trade window. You can only trade if your Steam account is considered as trusted, which requires that you have made a valid purchase from the Steam store more than 30 days before the trade. The Steam Guard feature must also have been enabled for at least 15 days prior to trading.

    Precautions

    • When gifting or trading, take a few precautions in order to safeguard yourself and your account. If you plan on transferring games to another account in return for games or items, ensure that the user that you are trading with is reputable. Be cautious about users offering you CD keys or PayPal payments in return for games, as Steam offers no protection for such trades. All trades are final and you are prompted multiple times to verify that you are agreeing to the trade. Be cautious of scammers that attempt to impersonate your friends, and pay attention to the trade to ensure that you are not rushed into making a bad trade.

    Registered Games

    • Once you have purchased a game and it is redeemed to your Steam account, there is no way to transfer it to another user or profile. Any games that you gift or trade to another user also becomes untransferable once she adds it to her account. If you have multiple Steam accounts, the Steam Subscriber Agreement states that you cannot merge the two accounts together in order to transfer games. It is also against the subscriber agreement to share your account or attempt to sell it to another user.
