Getting Started
The very first thing you'll want to do is go out and gather some materials. Head to the nearest group of trees. Use your attack button to chop them down with your hand, collecting the wood blocks they drop. It's wise to get about 20 to 30 blocks of wood this way before proceeding to basic tool-making so you'll have plenty of wood to get you started.
Basic Crafting
When you go into your inventory, you'll see an area titled "Crafting." Crafting in "Minecraft" is how you make tools, weapons and most player-created items. Your Inventory menu's basic Crafting area can't make full tools, but you can create the materials you'll need for tool-making there. Place some of your newly acquired wooden blocks into one of your crafting area's four boxes, and you'll see Wooden Planks appear next to the Crafting box. Every piece of wood creates four Wooden Planks. Use at least one-third of your wood creating planks. Next, place two pieces of wood vertically in the Crafting area. The result is a stick, used for tool handles. Two blocks of wood creates four sticks. Make 12 to 16 sticks and drag them into your inventory.
Crafting Table
Unlike the four-squared crafting grid in your Inventory, a Crafting Table has a nine-square crafting grid, enabling you to craft more advanced items. Before making a Crafting Table, though, it's wise to find a flat plot of land where you'll build your first house. When night falls, monsters come out and attack, so having a shelter is essential for surviving the night. Once you've found the site of your future shelter, open the Inventory and place a Wooden Plank into each of the four "Crafting" slots. You'll see a Crafting Table in the results box. Grab the table with your mouse and drag it to your bottom row of inventory, where you place items for your character to hold and use. Use your mouse button to place the Crafting Table on the ground in front of you.
Wooden Tools
Your first round of tools will be wooden tools, since wood is the most easily accessible building block this early in the game. Use a crafting chart to familiarize yourself with the patterns -- also called "recipes" -- used for crafting a Pickaxe, an Axe and a Shovel (see Resources). Also learn the crafting pattern for a sword, so you can protect yourself should you encounter any monsters. Right-click your Crafting Table to bring up the table's Crafting menu. Use the recipes you just learned to create a Wooden Axe, Pickaxe, Shovel and Sword, the basic tools you'll need to go farther in the game. Once you have better materials -- such as Stone, Iron, Gold and Diamond -- you'll be able to make more durable versions of the same tools.
