Computer Recommendation for Minecraft

Video game developer Mojang created "Minecraft" as an open world game where you collect materials to create new items and build new structures. The PC version of the game has several system requirements that your computer must meet to run efficiently, although Mojang recommends higher system components for better game play. You can change audio and video settings in the Options menu to decrease the workload on older computers or take advantage of hardware acceleration features on newer ones.
  1. Minimum Hardware

    • To play "Minecraft," your computer needs to have at least an Intel P4 or AMD K7 CPU. It needs an Intel GMA 950 graphics processing unit with support for OpenGL 1.2 to render the graphics in the game. It also needs at least 90 MB of disk space to install core game and sound files, as well as 2 GB RAM. Your computer's operating system must be at least Windows XP. Most new machines exceed these requirements. For example, the Khronos Group released OpenGL 4.3 in 2012.

    Recommended Hardware

    • For a more seamless game play experience, Mojang recommends more powerful hardware components, beginning with an Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 2.6 GHz CPU. If you have at least a GeForce 6xxx or ATI Radeon 9xxx with OpenGL 2 or greater for graphics and 4 GB RAM, you will notice that the game play is smoother and has stronger colors. In addition, Mojang recommends 150 MB of disk space for additional game files and saved games.

    Version

    • Mojang periodically updates "Minecraft" with new features, enhancements and bug fixes. As such, older versions of the game may not run well or at all in certain environments. You need to have at least version 1.2.5 of the game. If you are running an older version, the next time you try to connect it to the Internet, the game will prompt you to update to the latest version, which, as of July 2013, is 1.6.2.

    Other Software

    • Mojang developed "Minecraft" for PC using the Java programming language and as such, it makes use of Java Platform, Standard Edition. Java SE lets the game make use of several Java APIs and classes, including allowing you to play multiplayer games online. Without Java installed on your computer, "Minecraft" will not run properly. At a minimum, you need to run Java with version SE 6 Update 32 of the platform, but Mojang recommends Java SE 7 Update 4. Java SE is freely available from Oracle.
