How to Use Tripwire in Minecraft

In survival mode, "Minecraft" challenges you fend off hostile creatures while using the environment and resources to your advantages. You can attack monsters directly, but sometimes it is more effective to make use of traps. A key component in traps is the tripwire, which is a string connected to tripwire hooks. As soon as a monster touches the tripwire, it triggers and activates any traps that you have connected to it, allowing you to guard against hostile creatures without having to attack them with your character. Traps are also effective against other players when playing online.
  1. String

    • The primary component of a tripwire is string. To harvest string in "Minecraft" you need to kill spiders and cave spiders. Each spider carries up to two pieces of string, which are dropped upon death. Cave spiders are the more dangerous of the two species as they are venomous and can poison your character. Use a bow and arrow to attack from a distance to prevent this from happening. A less dangerous way of obtaining string is by finding and destroying cobwebs. Cobwebs yield only one piece of string when destroyed but this method carries less risk than attacking spiders.

    Tripwire Hook

    • For the tripwire to be of any use, it has to be connected to two tripwire hooks. The hooks function as switches that are activated once anything triggers the tripwire that connects the two hooks. Tripwire hooks can be placed no further than 40 blocks apart and the tripwire that connects the hooks must be placed in a straight line to function. A tripwire hook is created by combining an iron ingot, stock and one set of oak wood planks on your crafting table.

    Setup

    • The tripwire hooks cannot be placed on the ground so you must attach them to the side of a block in the game world. Once the hooks are connected to blocks that are directly opposite each other, equip the string from your inventory. Right-click (right-trigger on Xbox 360) each of the squares between the two tripwire hooks to place the string. Once the final string is placed, the two hooks are connected and the tripwire is active. You will hear a clicking sound to indicate that the wire is placed correctly.

    Traps

    • Once a tripwire is activated, it sends out a charge to the two tripwire hooks that it is attached to. This can be used to create traps using redstone. Redstone is mined from redstone ore using an iron pickaxe. The redstone ore is usually found near bedrock and has magnetic properties, so it will relay the charge from your tripwire hooks. For example, you can connect your tripwire hooks to an arrow dispenser using redstone so that if a monster or other player triggers the tripwire they are shot with an arrow. Tripwires can also be used to trigger doors and trapdoors.
