Building Cooking Levels
All "Sims 2" characters begin the game with level zero cooking skills. Although the majority of Sims characters are able to prepare the simplest of foods -- TV dinners, cookies, cereal and sandwiches for example -- at level zero, turkey and most other foods are beyond them. Building cooking skills can be achieved in several ways: Reading cookbooks and viewing cooking programs on the Yummy television channel both build cooking skills, as does the act of cooking itself. If you are still at the default level zero or at any level beneath level seven, this is the reason you can't cook turkey. Gain cooking skill points so you can build your level until you're eligible to cook turkey successfully.
Burning Foods
Once you reach level seven, you are eligible to cook turkey in "The Sims 2." The other new foods that can be successfully attempted at level seven include salmon and layer cake. If you attempt to cook turkey prior to achieving level seven in cooking skills, the food will burn. The other circumstance in which turkey -- or any other cooked food -- will burn is when you leave the home to go to work while the oven is on.
Single Plates vs. Group Meals
Most foods in the game are single-plate meals, but turkey is one of the group meals. There are very few group meals in "The Sims 2," and they are four times more costly than the single-plate meals. If you attempt to prepare turkey as a single-plate meal, you will be unable to successfully do so. Be sure that you click "Group Meal" in the selection menu to get the turkey option.
Times of Day for Cooking
The foods that you can cook are dependent upon the current time of day within the game. If you try to cook turkey during the morning or early afternoon hours, you will be unable to do so because turkey is a dinner item in the game. During the evening hours when turkey is available to cook, you will see dinner, dessert, and the always-present snack option.
