How to Get a Cultural Victory on Civilization V

You can win a game of "Civilization V" a few different ways. You can crush your opponents in war, wiping everyone else the map. You can complete the building of the space station, triggering a scientific victory. You can win the vote to lead the United Nations and obtain a diplomatic victory. Or you can expand your civilization̵7;s cultural policies, unlocking five full branches of the policy tree and obtaining a cultural victory.
  1. How To Win a Cultural Victory

    • To trigger a cultural victory in "Civilization V," your civilization must fully develop five branches of the social policy tree. You buy policies with culture points that you gain by building buildings in your cities that accumulate culture. "Civilization V" has 10 social branches in total, and to unlock any branch you have to buy policies in order.

    Culture-Driven Civilizations

    • Not all civilizations in "Civilization V" have the same bonuses. Where the Americans and English have military bonuses that favor a domination victory, the Greeks and French have civilizations that accumulate culture points faster to aid in a cultural victory. The French civilization gains double culture from cultural buildings until the Industrial Age whereas the Greeks gain double bonuses from city states, meaning that cultural city states will build your culture points much faster than with another civilization. Choosing either of these civilizations gives you an immediate cultural advantage.

    Picking Social Policies Wisely

    • As you accumulate culture points and spend them on policies, consider buying policies early in the game that boost your culture output and lower the cost of future social policies. Adopting the ̶0;Tradition̶1; branch when you can buy your first policy will add +3 culture to your capital city, speeding up the second policy. Adopting ̶0;Liberty̶1; after you̵7;ve built a few cities adds +1 culture in every city and later decreases the cost of new policies by 33 percent. The ̶0;Honor̶1; tree grants a bonus whereby killing barbarians gives a culture bonus; this is helpful for quickly adopting policies early in the game but has no culture bonus later on.

    Culture-Based Wonders

    • As your civilization expands, you can further general culture points by building world wonders. The Alhambra, which you can build after researching chivalry, boosts a city̵7;s cultural output by 20 percent. Christo Redentor, a late-game wonder, lowers the cost of new policies by 10 percent. The Sydney Opera House gives its city a 50 percent boost. Building Petra expands that city̵7;s culture by +6 after researching archeology. If you can beat other civilizations to building these wonders, you̵7;ll have a cultural edge sure to lead to cultural victory.
