Corrupt Data
If the patch file you downloaded is corrupt, then the patch install will fail and you'll receive an error message. This could happen because the download was interrupted or because of a hard drive problem. In rare cases, computer viruses could corrupt the data. The only solution to this is to download the patch again and then install it. If you think your computer has a virus, especially if it crashes frequently, you should download a reliable anti-virus program and scan your computer.
Game Problem
If your "Need for Speed: Shift" game is corrupt, the patch installation may fail. This is likely the problem if your game doesn't run when you start it, although sometimes a corrupt game runs but encounters occasional errors, perhaps including crashes. Reinstalling the game is a good troubleshooting step if the patch won't install, but because of the time required to uninstall and reinstall the game, you may prefer to leave this as a last resort.
Wrong Language
Electronic Arts games are played all over the world, and the patches for "Need for Speed: Shift" are each intended for use with certain versions and languages. If you have the North American version, download and install the patch for use in North America; all other versions should use the patch EA labels as "All other languages." If you install the wrong language version, the installation may fail or display an error message. You can find out where your game is intended for use on the back cover of the box or by reading the print on the disk itself.
Outdated Patch
The most recent patch for "Need for Speed: Shift" is version 1.02. If you try to install an older patch than the one you currently have, such as patch 1.01, you'll encounter an error during the install. Although EA only lists the 1.02 patch, other third-party websites may still have older patches available. The file name for the patch should say "1.02" in it, and the website you download it from should identify the patch number. If you download from EA's website at needforspeed.com/downloads, you know you're getting the most up-to-date option.
Wrong Patch
EA has released many versions of "Need for Speed," and you might have simply downloaded the wrong one. This is especially easy to do on third-party websites that may not clearly identify the game for which the patch is intended. You should download the patch from EA's own website and make sure it is the patch for "Need for Speed: Shift." The file name should have the word "Shift" in it so you can tell it's the right one.
