Errors at Startup
̶0;Diablo II̶1; may provide a number of different error messages at startup if your ATI video card fails to process the game̵7;s information correctly. These errors commonly display ̶0;Error 22̶1; or ̶0;No Video Modes Found̶1; as part of their title lines. A common cause of this issue lies in the device̵7;s drivers. Outdated drivers may cause the card to misinterpret the shaded graphics and 3D acceleration options available in the game. Updating your drivers to the latest version available from ATI should correct this issue. The ATI Radeon 9600 drivers are now part of the legacy driver package due to the age of the card.
Black Screens
Black screens may appear at startup or during gameplay due to errors with the video card. These screens prevent viewing of the game, even though gameplay sounds and music continue. This commonly occurs when attempting to play an older version of the game for which later updates have increased compatibility with some video cards and video card settings. Patching the game to the latest version should help correct this issue. Also, the use of third-party programs or some anti-virus settings may also cause similar errors.
Poor Performance
The ATI 9600 meets the basic system requirements for ̶0;Diablo II̶1; and its expansion, but performance issues may arise due to high resolution settings and the use of shadow effects. These problems typically take the form of stutter, causing the game to freeze momentarily at random intervals. The game features the ability to choose between two different resolutions and turn hardware support for shadows off. It is also possible to turn off DirectDraw 3D support from the video setup options included with the game. Uninstall all unrelated drivers, such as those belonging to previous cards used on the system, prior to updating drivers, as these may also cause similar issues.
Additional Information
Unhandled exceptions may occur due to some video card problems, but these are more commonly related to operating system versions. ̶0;Diablo II: Lord of Destruction̶1; was designed to work best on Windows XP or Vista systems. Macintosh users should use Mac OS X version 10.3.9 or higher. You can select compatibility options from the program̵7;s properties menu to allow more current operating systems to run similarly to these older versions. When these occur due to issues with the ATI 9600, it may be related to overheating. Ensure that all fans and other cooling devices in the system function well and are not dusty.
