Installation Problems With Star Trek: Armada II in Vista

"Star Trek: Armada II" was released in 2001, long before the advent of Windows Vista. It is not uncommon to see older games, such as "Armada II," having errors on newer operating systems. If you having problems installing or playing "Armada II" on Windows Vista, there are a few methods you can use to get your game running.
  1. "Star Trek: Armada II"

    • "Star Trek: Armada II" is a real-time strategy game based on the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" television show. After choosing your race from classic "Star Trek" staples, like the Federation, Klingon and Borg, your goal is to then amass your forces and destroy your enemies' ships and bases. In addition to a single player campaign, "Armada II" also features a Skirmish mode, pitting you instantly against an enemy without any story context, and online multiplayer modes that allow you to play against your friends. Activision, the publisher of the game, lost the "Star Trek" license in 2003, so there is no support or official patches for the game for any modern operating system.

    Before Installation

    • Before installing the game, examine your disc to see that it is in good working condition. Verify that there are no scratches on the disc, and clean any smudges you see with a soft cloth; scratches and smudges can cause your installation to fail if they are present. Close all programs before beginning installation, such as your anti-virus program, any Internet browsers and other games or software programs. This ensures that there is no outside complications when attempting to install "Star Trek: Armada II."

    Compatibility Mode

    • If you are still having problems installing the game, set the installation program to compatibility mode. To do this, navigate to the "Setup.exe" file located on the disc. Right-click this file, select "Properties" from the pop-up menu, followed by the "Compatibility" tab. Set the program to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP; if that fails, select "Windows 98." In addition, set the program to run as administrator. Click "Apply" to save your changes, followed by "OK" and run the setup program again; it should now successfully install the game.

    "Armada II" Unofficial Patch

    • After "Armada II" is installed, Vista users face another problem; the game does not run well or at all under Windows Vista. Since the publisher, Activision, can no longer provide support for the game due to license issues, fans of the game have created an unofficial patch. This patch is available as a free download for the game (see the "Star Trek: Armada II" patch in Resources). In addition to making the game playable under Windows Vista, it also fixes problems that Vista introduces into the Skirmish and Multiplayer modes, making both of those modes fully playable as well.
