How to Build a Game With Storyboards

Video games have come a long way since the introduction of computer technology. Visuals now go hand-in-hand with gaming action. Indeed, a picture is worth a thousand words, especially when it comes to gaming design. One of the major tools available for you to use to bring your vision to life is among the same tools used to bring movies and animation to life, namely the tried and true storyboard. Storyboards capture the concept art of the world in which your game takes place and convey the important action frame by frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the script for your game. Introduce the main character and his quest, as well as what levels to include and what challenges the hero must face to move forward. Use this script as your blueprint for the specific panels you will use for the storyboard.

    • 2

Create your main characters in their own introductory panels. Include the various poses needed for your particular game play to give a more three-dimensional representation of your characters. A warrior, for instance, would be shown with different weapons. Be detailed when it comes to costume design and any accessories needed to advance in the game.

    • 3

Draw panels for each level of the game. Include all interior and exterior locations. Use colors and scenery to convey a mood. Make these panels count by capturing the essence of each level with its particular challenge or obstacle. If your hero must defeat a monster in level three, for example, draw that monster with the level three background. If your hero gets a new weapon in level four, include that with the level four background.

    • 4

Caption your panels accordingly. Include any dialogue that may be included in the game to give life to your narrative. But remember this is a summary only; include only necessary information that is not conveyed in the picture. Limit this to one to three lines if possible.

    • 5

Organize all of the panels in order to tell the story from beginning to end. Tell your story completely, all the way to your hero completing his quest and your player winning the game.
