Patches for computer games are distributed to fix problems and add features within the game. EA released four patches for "Need for Speed: Underground" to address several issues. History
Need for Speed: Underground was released on Nov. 17, 2003. The first patch for the game was released by EA just four days later; it corrected some bugs within the game and closed some exploits discovered by gamers. The second patch was released in early December 2003, though no details were provided about the patch. The third patch was released in late December 2003 and fixed hardware and stability problems, improved cheat detection and added functionality to some of the game modes. The fourth patch was released in February 2004 and corrected a black screen problem some players experienced when using nitrous oxide in game.
Installing Patches
The first three patches were downloaded and installed to the game via the automatic updating feature. With the Start menu open, click the box next to "Check for Updates" to download and install the first three patches. The fourth patch was available as a manual update, since the problem it solved was only useful for players having black screen problems when using nitrous oxide. The manual update is available from several websites, including GamersHell, CNet and Softpedia. Once downloaded, double-click the patch to install it on your computer.
Considerations
Need for Speed: Underground has an online component that allows you to race against players from around the world. The first, second and third patches are required for online play, since the patches address issues with the cheating detection system. Download and install the patches via the auto update feature in order to play the game online.
