What Is a Zone Runner?

"Zone Runner" is a series of independently released freeware platform games for computers running the Windows operating system. In each game you control a small character that must jump on raised platforms and collect coins. Each level, or zone, includes enemies and traps that you must avoid to defeat the level. Your character achieves victory and moves to the next zone when you collect all of the coins in the zone.
  1. History

    • Zone Runner was created in 2003 as part of an informal competition between the game's developer, Chris Street, and a fellow game programmer. With just a few days left in the competition, Street scrapped another game he was working on and decided to focus on creating a game that focused on engaging gameplay over complexity. Street created the game engine and thirty stages in just four days. Upon releasing Zone Runner to the public the game went viral, leading to features in "Bravo Screenfun" and "Retro Gamer" magazines and thousands of downloads worldwide.

    Gameplay

    • The original installation of the "Zone Runner" series includes ten single-screen levels and fifteen side scrolling levels that require a combination of dexterity and puzzle-solving to conquer. Your character's two primary means of avoiding death are jumping over enemies and using devices embedded within the level to avoid obstacles in creative ways. "Zone Runner 2" uses a similar gameplay engine to the original but adds a save game system in addition to new interactive objects and challenges.

    Download

    • Both "Zone Runner" and "Zone Runner 2" are freeware games. You can download the games from a number of Internet sources, including the developer's official download website. To download the two games in the "Zone Runner" series, open your Web browser and navigate to www.acoders.com/software/zone-runner-compilation-155. Click the floppy disc image on the left side of the screen to save the game to your hard drive.

    Zone Runner 3

    • Chris Street began development on "Zone Runner 3" in July 2010. The game is based on the classic Zone Runner engine but adds additional gameplay controls, such as variable jumping height and the ability to duck to avoid objects. Street plans to include additional "Trial Stage" levels that require you to collect coins within a time limit. As of the time of publication, the game is still under development for PC and for the XBox Live market.
