How to Map a Keyboard to the Game Elements on a GamePad

You may run into problems trying to use a gamepad to play your games on your computer. Often, software is not set up to accept commands from such a device. You can use Joy2Key to map keyboard commands to your gamepad. This allows you to play games, run programs or use your gamepad as a remote control while watching movies on your computer.

      Download Joy2Key from the Electracode website. Open the downloaded ZIP file. Drag the folder in the ZIP file to your computer's desktop. Open the folder, then drag the "joy2key.exe" file to your desktop. Double-click the executable file launch Joy2Key.

      Go to "Control Panel" and select "Game Controllers". Double-click the controller you are using to open the Controller Properties screen. Press all of the buttons on your controller and note which of the indicators light up for each button press.

      Open the Joy2Key window. Select "File," then select "Create New Configuration File." Give the configuration file a memorable name. Select "OK."

      Select the command you want to map in the Command List on the right of the Joy2Key window. Double-click the command to open the Configuration window. Press the key or mouse command that you want to emulate. The command appears in the highlighted field. Select "OK." Repeat this process for each command that you want to configure.

      Launch the game and leave Joy2Key open. Your gamepad's buttons will perform the actions associated with the keystroke or mouse command that the game uses.
