Creating the USB Folder
Plug a USB drive into your computer.
Open a new window and navigate to the USB drive under "My Computer." Create a folder called "PS3." Open the folder and create a folder inside called "UPDATE." Capitalize both titles of the folders.
Download the update file from Playstation's website under "System Software Updates." Once downloaded, double-click to open the folder and find the "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file. Drag into the "UPDATE" folder on your USB drive.
Unplug the USB drive from your computer and plug into a free slot on your PS3. Go to "Settings" on the XMB menu. Click "System Settings" and select "System Update." Select "Update via storage media." PS3 scans the USB. Click "OK" to copy the update file to the PS3's hard disk. Your Playstation will then reboot.
Click on the "PS" button once Playstation reboots and shows you an installer screen. Click "Accept" on the user agreement, then press "X" to confirm installation. Once the update installs, your PS3 will reboot.
