How to Make Dialogue With a TES Construction Kit

Once you complete "The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion," it does not have to be the end of your game. A free game editor called "The Elder Scrolls Construction Kit" is available and with some time and dedication, it is possible to create your own quests and dialogue for the game. Once you have created your modifications to the game code, you can save it as a separate file. You can then give this file to other players so they can enjoy your creation.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the construction kit and click "File," "Data." Click on Double-click "Oblivion.esm" and then click "Ok." This will load the game data into the construction kit and allow you to start changing and adding things. If you have created a previous mod with your own characters for which you want to create dialogue, select this instead.

    • 2

Click "NPC" under "Actors" in the "Object Window" situated on the left of the program screen. This shows you a list of all the non-player characters (NPC) in the game.

    • 3

Right-click on any of the NPC names and select "New" from the pop-up menu. Enter a unique ID such as "mynewnpc" for your character in the "ID" box. Type a name for your character in the "Name" box. Select a race for your character from the drop-down list next to "Race." Click "Ok" when you are done.

    • 4

Click "Character" from the menu bar and then click "Quests." Right-click on the left side of the quest screen and select "New" from the pop-up menu.

    • 5

Right-click on the "Add Topics" list on the right side of the screen. Right-click on the list of available topics. Select "New" from the pop-up menu and type the name of your new topic. This only appears in the editor not the game so name it something descriptive like "newquestdialogue" and then click "Ok."

    • 6

Click the "Topics" tab at the top of the window and under the "Editor ID" section right-click and select "Add topic." Scroll down to "Greeting" and left-click on it before clicking "Ok."

    • 7

Right-click the "Info" area under "Topic Text" and select "New." A new window opens where you have to type in your "Response text" which is the dialogue that the NPC will give when you talk to them about the selected topic. Since the topic is a greeting enter some dialogue in the "Response Text" box that the character will greet you with in the game and then click "Ok."

    • 8

Right-click the area under "Conditions" on the bottom of the window and select "New." Select "GetIsID" from the drop down menu under "Condition Function." Click the button under "Function Parameters" and under "Object Id" select the name of your NPC which in this case would be "mynewnpc." Click "Ok"

    • 9

Add more topics like you did for the greeting and set the condition function to your NPC function. Instead of the list of available topics you are also able to create your own topics by right-clicking on one of the exiting topics and selecting "New." For each topic you create, remember to enter the new dialogue in the "Response Text" box.
