Click "Play" from the main menu. Select "Path of Peace" or "Path of War," depending on the type of game you want to play.
Choose "Sim Campaign" after selecting the "Path of Peace" to play a campaign that focuses on building up the economy of your stronghold. Select "Free Build Mode" to build without any threat of enemies.
Select "Campaign" under "Path of War" to play through a campaign focused on castle sieges. Select "Kingmaker" to play a skirmish against enemies without a story.
Place a building by clicking on it in the "Building Panel" at the bottom of the screen. Place it by clicking on the ground. If the building can't be placed, it will show as a red square. This can be because the ground isn't level or you are lacking the required resources. Rotate a building using the mouse wheel. Remove a building by clicking "Delete" and then clicking a building.
Place a "Stockpile" building by selecting it from the building panel. Stockpiles collect resources such as wood and stone.
Place a "Granary" to collect food. Only one granary is needed and it can hold an unlimited amount of food. Click the granary to see more information about the types of foods being eaten. You can also set the amount of food to ration if you have a high population and a limited food supply, but this will damage your popularity.
Place "Hovels" to attract more peasants to your area. This increases the total population in the area. Peasants will automatically become workers when a building that requires them is built. If no one is working in a building, more peasants are needed. You must keep peasants happy or they will stop working. Raise morale by increasing food stores, adding taverns and reducing crime. Click "Report" to see the overall happiness of the area.
Place an armory, a fletcher's workshop and a barracks to begin building up your army. Click your barracks to select the type of soldiers to make. Each type of soldier has a weapon and armor requirement; these are created in the armory and in workshops. Alternatively, soldiers can be made using a "Mercenary Post" and only require a gold amount.
Reduce crime by creating a "Guard Post," a "Courthouse" and a "Dungeon." This will allow guards to arrest criminals.
Place a "Lady's Bedchamber" to get married.
Attack enemies by clicking a unit or by clicking and dragging the mouse over multiple units and then clicking on an enemy.
