Vegetation Problems in the Borderlands Game

When you're tearing around Pandora with your "Borderlands" buddies, few things are more distracting than coming across floating patches of grass. If the vegetation in your game isn't displaying correctly, there are a few possible causes. You may be able to fix this problem by tweaking one of the game files, but you should exhaust all other troubleshooting options first.
  1. System Requirements

    • Before you start tweaking your game settings, make sure that your system has what it takes to run the game properly. "Borderlands" requires a minimum of a 2.4GHz processor, 1GB of RAM -- or 2GB with Windows Vista or 7 -- a graphics card with 256GB of RAM, 8GB of free hard drive space and a Windows-compatible sound card. If you are experiencing graphics rendering problems, then your processor speed and graphics card are the two components you should pay closest attention to.

    DirectX and Graphics Drivers

    • Graphics drivers are software programs that support your computer's graphics card. If they are out of date, this can create problems with displaying graphics. Your computer's System Properties should show you what kind of graphics card you have installed. Once you know your graphics card, search the card manufacturer's website for any driver updates. Also verify that DirectX, Windows' multimedia support platform, is up to date. Most games do not run properly without an updated installation of DirectX.

    Game Settings

    • Like virtually all other games, the "Borderlands" main menu gives you the ability to customize your game settings. Turning your graphics quality down to low often speeds up your game and fixes any graphics-related problems. It can also make for a better connection if you are playing in multiplayer mode. Find a good balance between game performance and the quality of your graphics.

    WillowEngine.ini Tweak

    • If you're experiencing floating or hovering foliage, many players have had success with disabling the game's ability to create plants in the first place. Find the "Borderlands" folder within "Documents" and "My Games." Open up the "WillowGame" folder, then the "Config" subfolder. Use a plain text editor to open the "WillowEngine.ini" file. Setting the "FoliageDrawRadiusMultiplier" value to zero should fix your plant problems.
