How to Remove Expanded Memory Manager From DOSBox

Some games that were originally released for Microsoft DOS required use of expanded memory. MS-DOS had strict limitations on how much RAM could be used for running programs. The expanded memory manager allowed programs to access RAM beyond the first 1,024 kilobytes. DOSBox allows you to enable or disable expanded memory through a command line. It can also save the settings into a CONF file so you don't have to enter it manually every time you run the game.

Instructions

  1. Removing Expanded Memory Manager Manually

    • 1

Open DOSBox from the Windows Start menu.

    • 2

Type "config -set "dos ems=off"" into the command line. Remember to remove the exterior quotation marks. Leave the quotation marks around dos ems=off.

    • 3

Press "Enter" to submit the command.

    Removing Expanded Memory Manager Automatically

    • 4

Open the DOSBox menu in the Windows Start menu and select "Configuration."

    • 5

Click "Edit Configuration." The dosbox.conf file will open in Notepad.

    • 6

Locate the line that reads "ems=true." You can search for the line by clicking "Edit" and selecting "Find" or pressing "Ctrl+F."

    • 7

      Change "true" to "false."

    • 8

      Click "File" and select "Save."
