How to Start in Flight Simulator X With the Engine Off

One of the only unrealistic features of "Flight Simulator X" is that when you start a flight in Free Flight mode, the engines of your plane are already up and running. However, thanks to a large community of fans, you can apply a modification to the game that enables you to start your flights by booting up all the aircraft's systems, thus providing yourself with a more realistic sense of what it means to be a pilot.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the FSX Cold and Dark Cockpit Mod from the Simviation website.

    • 2

Open the location of your "Other" folder within the "Flight Simulator X" directory. By default, it is located at "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\flights\other."

    • 3

Locate the "fltsim.flt" file. Select it and then press "Ctrl+C" and "Ctrl+V" to back it up. That way, if anything goes wrong, you have a copy of the original file.

    • 4

Open the downloaded FSX Cold and Dark Cockpit Mod file using WinZip or WinRAR.

    • 5

Find the "fltsim.flt" file within the downloaded folder. Drag and drop it into your "Other" folder to install the mod.

    • 6

Start your "Flight Simulator X" game and select "Free Flight" from the game's menu. When it starts, your plane should be silent and powered off.
