Finding a Job
The only way to blacksmith is to become one, so start with that. Find a guard in a town or city and open a dialogue. Talk about professional training and ask about blacksmithing. If you're in luck, there's a trainer nearby. Just follow the yellow arrow on the map to the spot with a red flag and an exclamation point. Speak to the trainer and choose to become an apprentice. If there's no trainer about, the guard will point you toward the nearest city that has one. Start walking and don't worry about wearing out your steel boots. You're about to become a blacksmith. You can make more.
Finding Another Job
A life of fighting evil and sweating over a hot anvil isn't easy and the thank yous are few and far between. At the end of the day, taking up another job is still the way to go. Choose mining as a secondary gathering profession. Get this job the same way you got the last one. The bulk of weapons and armor made by your blacksmith involve materials gathered from mineral veins. A miner's purpose is to get those materials.
The Basics
Blacksmiths need patterns from trainers, auction houses and monster-bashing to create their wares. In addition to a pattern and its ingredients, you'll need a trusty Blacksmith's Hammer. Obtain this vital piece of equipment from your neighborhood trade goods vendor. Once you're ready, your anvil awaits. Find one in any major city, or most smaller towns. Bring up the professions menu and select "Blacksmithing." Decide on your project and click "Create."
Getting Better
Azeroth's best blacksmiths aren't born. They're made through practice and hard work. Fortunately for you, this is mostly about clicking your mouse. Craft items to level your Blacksmithing skill. Use that anvil and choose patterns highlighted in yellow and orange to gain the most experience for your work. Avoid forging the items in gray when leveling; they give you no experience at all. As you practice your craft, the levels you gain will give you access to better patterns.
Humility
Humble blacksmiths are wealthy blacksmiths. While your colleagues are climbing mountains and going on days long raids just to find the last ingredient in an epic armor recipe, you can rest easy knowing your products have the whole of Azeroth as their niche. You'll get the most bang for your buck from two simple items: Weightstones and Sharpening Stones. Everyone needs these. They increase weapon damage and only last an hour. In a place like Azeroth, there is a great need for them. Practice your craft until you can make these for characters of any level. Sell them in bulk and watch your wealth grow.
