How to Roll a Tank

As a tank in ̶0;World of Warcraft,̶1; it is your responsibility to keep your allies safe while you face some of the largest and most dangerous creatures in the game. A tank refers to the character who protects the group by concentrating enemy aggression, referred to as ̶0;agro,̶1; on yourself. The role requires strong defensive gear and the right tanking mechanics to build agro faster than your damage dealers. In ̶0;World of Warcraft,̶1; you can choose from four different tanking classes and 10 different races. Each race and class combination gives you access to different abilities and advantages, but the final decision is up to you.

From the opening screen, select a realm for your new tank. Choose between a standard realm or a player versus player realm, where you can challenge players from the opposing faction to fight you in open territories. If you already have friends who play, select the realm your friends play on and join them in their adventures through the ̶0;World of Warcraft.̶1; Once you select a realm, click on the ̶0;Create New Character̶1; button to access the character creation screen.

Choose a tanking class between warrior, druid, paladin or death knight. Note that you can only create a death knight once you already have a character of level 55 or higher in the game, so if you are a new player, you must choose between the first three options. Select warrior or druid if you want to make use of the rage system, the accumulation of energy to use your abilities based on damage you take while tanking. Select paladin if you prefer to use the mana system, a bar of energy which depletes as you use it and may require you to drink to regain mana out of combat. Select death knight to use the rune system, which is a set of timers governing how often you can use certain powers.

Select a race and faction that has access to your chosen class. Remember, not all races can be every class. Review the racial benefits for each race, such as the Tauren̵7;s increase in health or the Draenei̵7;s self heal. Consider the implications of each race̵7;s benefit, such as the human ability to generate reputation faster, which benefits you during reputation gains but no longer benefits you once you achieve maximum reputation.

Adjust your character̵7;s appearance, hair style and gender based on your personal preferences, but remember that you will spend a considerable amount of time looking at your character, so make sure you like his appearance. Type a name for your new tank in the box located in the lower center of your screen. Click on the ̶0;Accept̶1; button once you finish to enter the world. If the name you selected already exists in the world, the game will prompt you to select a new name.
