How to Install Half-Life Without Steam

Steam is an online distribution and copy-protection medium from the game developer Valve. "Half-Life," one of their popular early titles, is a science fiction first-person shooter game that is distributed via the Steam service. If you don't have an Internet connection, copies of "Half-Life" installed via the service will not run, as they cannot be verified. There are, however, alternative ways to install the game on your machine without a Steam account.

Things You'll Need

  • Pre-Steam copy of "Half-Life" v1.5

Instructions

Ensure your computer is not connected to the Internet. Place the "Half-Life" CD in your computer's drive and wait for the splash screens to clear. Select "Install" from the menu and select a suitable install directory. By default, the install directory will be "C:\Program Files\Valve\Half Life."

Complete the install by clicking "finish" on the pop-up dialog. After the files have been copied, the installer may attempt to install additional graphics or Direct X software. This is fairly unlikely, as the original "Half-Life" game has been around since the late 1990s.

Wait for the updates box to appear. It will request permission to contact Valve for more recent updates. Do not download any updates. Later versions of "Half-Life" require a Steam account in order to validate their authenticity. You should now be able to launch "Half-Life" from the created shortcut on your desktop or the link in your start menu.
