StarCraft Summary

"Starcraft" from Blizzard Entertainment is a futuristic military strategy game, played in real-time on either PC or Mac platforms. Set in the 26th century, the game revolves around three races fighting for supremacy of the Koprulu Sector, a distant part of the Milky Way. Reviewers attribute much of the game's popularity to its compelling storyline.
  1. Three Races

    • The game involves three powerful races: the enigmatic, mystical Protoss; the Zerg, a fierce race of insectoid aliens; and the Terrans, who are human exiles from Earth. The Protoss is a physically strong humanoid species, with psionic abilties. This means they can use the mind to create paranormal phenomena. The Protoss is the most technically advanced race in the game. Their main enemy is the Zerg, and a battle between these two races is the focus of the third campaign in "Starcraft." The Terrans are a future vision of humanity. Unlike the other races, they fight each other as well as their enemies, and are also known for draining a planet's resources. In the storyline, the Terrans are usually caught between the Protoss and Zerg conflicts. The Zerg are parasitic insectoids and the antagonists of the game. This race's objective is genetic perfection through the assimilation of other races.

    Setting

    • The background story starts on Earth in the 21st century, when a fictional international government decides to exile undesirable humans to a distant part of the Milky Way galaxy. These include criminals and genetic mutants. On arrival in the Koprulu Sector of the galaxy, the exiles, or Terrans, form governments that then start conflicts with each other. The strongest government is the Confederacy of Man, but its brutal methods of control stir up a rebellion by the terrorist group, Sons of Korhal. At the beginning of the game, the Protoss have just wiped out a Confedracy colony. The Terrans also discover that the Zerg have infested several of its colonies. Under attack from two alien races, the Terran colony starts to fall apart.

    Characters

    • During the game a player takes on the role of three characters. The first character is a Confederacy magistrate who is forced to join the rebel Sons of Korhul and accomplish the group's campaign. In the second part of the game, the player takes on the role of a Zerg commander who is controlled by the Zerg Swarm. The player has to achieve the Zerg's objectives by following advice from higher ranking Zerg commanders, also known as "cerebrates." In the third part of the game, the player is a Protoss military officer called the Executor. This officer reports to Aldaris, a member of the Portoss government. He is in conflict with a character called Tassadar, who previously occupied the position the player now has.

    Instruction Manual

    • The game's story is presented through an on-screen instruction manual. This provides initial mission briefings and also presents information within the missions. Sometimes a menu screen appears showing characters' faces and the player can hear and read conversations between the characters. Players use different levels of artificial intelligence as part of play strategy and, as each race relies on minerals and vespene gas supplies to sustain its economy, players have to collect these throughout the game.
