How to Make Minecraft Less Laggy Without Increasing RAM

The "Minecraft" building game allows you to gather and place blocks of various materials in a randomly generated world to construct buildings and other structures. Because of the large amount of calculations required to generate terrain on the fly and determine the effect of each of your actions, "Minecraft" is quite memory-intensive and can feel laggy and unresponsive on older computers. Changing some of the game's settings and ensuring it has as much memory available as possible can increase performance without forcing you to upgrade your computer's RAM.

Instructions

    • 1

Close all non-essential programs before launching "Minecraft." Each program running on your computer takes up some memory; by closing them, you are ensuring that more memory is available for "Minecraft" to use.

    • 2

Launch the game. Click on the "Options" button, then click "Video Settings" and the "Render Distance" button to lower the game's render distance from "Far" to "Normal," "Short" or "Tiny." Each successive click on the button lowers the view distance by one level until you reach "Tiny," at which point the next click changes the setting back to "Far." This lowers the distance at which the game's terrain loads, reducing the amount of calculations the game has to perform.

    • 3

Click on the "Graphics" button in the Video Settings menu to change the game's graphics quality from "Fancy" to "Fast." Lowering graphics quality can speed up the process of loading new blocks.

    • 4

Click twice on the "Performance" button in the Video Settings menu to change the game's performance setting to "Max FPS." This setting is designed to increase the game's responsiveness on slower computers.
