How to Benchmark With COD 4

The engine used in Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare is a modified version of the IdTech 3 engine used in Quake 3. While more advanced, many of the original features and commands are still used. One such feature is the ability to record demos. Demos are a simple recording of all game-related actions that occurred. When a demo recording is played, all the recorded actions are executed from within the game to give the viewer a modestly accurate visual representation of the gameplay. In addition to the standard demo commands, you can use the TimeDemo feature. This will play the recorded actions as quickly as your machine is capable of, and provide you with your performance statistics. This type of benchmarking is useful for tweaking your graphics settings or when considering an upgrade. Benchmark the game by recording a demo from within a multiplayer match and playing it back in TimeDemo mode.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the game and join a multiplayer match. Preferably, you should join a server you regularly play on or one that is at least moderately populated.

    • 2

Press the "~" key. This expands the console. At the start of a round, type "/record benchmark" and press "Enter." Play through the entire match.

    • 3

Press the "~" key to bring down the console. Type "/stoprecord" and press "Enter" after the match has finished to stop demo recording.

    • 4

Close the game. Navigate to your Call of Duty 4 game folder. Quickly locate this folder by right clicking the shortcut icon and clicking the "Open File Location" option.

    • 5

Open the "Demo" folder. Right-click the "Benchmark" file and click "Cut." Open the "Mods" folder and then open the "ModWarfare" folder. Right-click the "Demo" folder and click "Paste." If the Demo folder does not exist, right click an empty area of the ModWarfare folder and click "New, Folder."

    • 6

Start the game. On the main menu, select "Mods" and then "ModWarefare." This action causes the game to restart.

    • 7

Press the "~" key again to display the console. Type "/timedemo benchmark" and press "Enter." This runs the recorded demo at maximum speed, and calculates the frame statistics. Press and hold the "Shift" and "~" keys consecutively to view your frame rate stats. The "Average" is typically the most important stat. This is simply the average amount of frames drawn every second. Higher values indicate better performance.
