How to Use RAMDisk With a Game

"RAMDisk" is a utility program that allows you to allocate a portion of your computer's random access memory (RAM) and utilize it as a sort of temporary hard drive. Information stored on this temporary hard drive will be erased when the computer restarts, but the information can be retrieved and utilized much faster. In the case of video games, you can dramatically increase the speed at which your computer starts and plays any game on the temporary hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install "RAMDisk" from Microsoft's website (see Resources). The program is free to download and use.

    • 2

Start "RAMDisk" by double-clicking its desktop icon or clicking on it from the start menu. Once loaded, its interface will have a handful of macros listed on its top toolbar.

    • 3

Click on the "BLD" macro. A window will appear asking you how much memory you would like to allocate for the pending program.

    • 4

Specify a size that is adequate enough to run the game on. Click "OK" to finalize the decision and allocate the memory. Once finished, a new, temporary directory will be created.

    • 5

Close the program by clicking the red "X" in the corner. The program's interface will be closed, but it will still run, as evidenced by its presence in the bottom-right corner, which will allow the memory to stay allocated.

    • 6

Install the desired game into the newly created directory. When choosing where to create the game's file path, adjust the file path to the newly allocated memory. The game's files and programs will installed to its location like normal. Once finished, you will be able to run and play the game at much faster speeds.
