What is "Stronghold Legends?"
"Stronghold" is a series of computer games designed by Firefly Studios that emulates the task of protecting or assaulting castle fortresses. "Legends" was released in 2006 as an extension of the "Stronghold 2" franchise. You can experience various realms, from England during the time of the heroic King Arthur to the mysterious lands of the diabolical Vlad Dracul (who was the origin of the vampire myth of Dracula.) The map editor allows you to edit the armies, castles and invaders of these lands, creating your own fantasy adventure.
Map Editing Basics
The first step before you attempt any edits is to familiarize yourself with the tools you will use most often. The castle structures and terrain height icons are ones you will use frequently, as well as the brush size and mini-map navigation tool. Start with a clean map and raise and lower the terrain until you have the general shape you desire, making use of various brush sizes for broad areas or details. Add flourishes to your terrain with various textures and add plants and water as needed to complete your unpopulated map.
Castle Construction
You can tackle castle construction using many methods. One technique is to add the primary starting towers in a simple geometric pattern, such as a square or hexagon, and then connect them with walls, adding a gate to the front of your castle. Others refer to a basic blueprint of an existing castle, which they recreate. Once the basic castle is complete, you should populate the structure with support industries and buildings and place troops in strategic locales.
Advanced Creation
You may want to script events to add flourish to the cookie-cutter "crush the castle" experience. The map editor uses conditional events called "triggers" to determine when a certain action takes place. "Actions" are the events that take place as the requirement of the trigger is met. You can also make creative use of the tools to exceed normal height restrictions, to build bridges in normally inaccessible areas and create hidden paths for troops. You should refer to fan websites, such as Stronghold Heaven or Stronghold Knights, to obtain more information about these techniques.
