How to Make ILS Landings in Flight Simulator X

Microsoft's "Flight Simulator X" is a simulation game that allows you to fly a multitude of different planes, including everything from a small, two-engine plane to a 747. Landing a plane can be an extremely challenge process. The landing mode allows you to customize the metrics of your plane and bring the plane down without ever directly steering the plane. Metrics are the mathematical location and angles of your plane that are responsible for guiding the ILS.

Instructions

    • 1

Approach a runaway when flying in "Flight Simulator X." In the game, any plane can perform an ILS landing.

    • 2

Press the "Shift" key and "3" at the same time to bring up the plane's automated GPS. A number of metrics and readouts will appear on your plane's virtual compass and leveling guide.

    • 3

Click the "PROC" button next to the compass screen to activate ILS landing mode. The "Approach" mode will be highlighted by default. A number of new windows will appear, as the plane takes over steering the plane from left to right.

    • 4

Change your "ILS Frequency" to a frequency close to 90 degrees to level out the plane. A typical ILS frequency is 105, largely because this will allow you to keep the plane fairly level but with enough curve to descend the plane toward the runway.

    • 5

Lower the number in the "IAS Window" to slow the plane down as you land. Continue lowering the IAS Window and ILS frequency as you approach the runaway and land.

    • 6

Stop on the runaway to complete the ILS landing. Once landed, your ILS Frequency should read 90 degrees and your IAS Window should read 0.
