Read the details about your talents. As you level, you receive talent points that can be used on your talent tree, giving you new or better abilities. Choose the talents that speed up your spell casts or increase the critical strikes of your damage dealt.
Get the best gear you can. This does not matter as much if you are a lower level, but at the highest level, it is important to have good armor, weapons and trinkets. Performing in raids is one of the most effective ways to get the best gear, so it may take time. Gear can also be traded or purchased from other players or the auction house. Better gear means more powerful spells and resistance to damage.
Watch your cool-downs. Warlocks have a lot of damage over time, or DoT, spells. When fighting, especially in extended fights, always perform the spells that need a cool-down first and, when the cool-down is finished, repeat the process. Your DoT spells are most effective when performed early because they take more time than single-shot spells.
Figure out the best rotation for you. Practice rotations on monsters and check your damage report to find out which spells are the most potent. Keep in mind that with the game patches, certain abilities may gain or lose power and you may have to change your rotation. Shadow bolt is the fastest and most damaging spell in the warlock's arsenal and should be used often. When leveling and fighting mobs at your skill level, use shadow bolt, curse of agony (a DoT spell), corruption (DoT) and siphon life when available or needed. When in a dungeon, perform your DoT spells and then shadow bolt as often as possible.
Always apply your buffs. Buffs are beneficial additions that stay on your character for a certain amount of time or until you die. It is easy to forget to reapply the buffs after dying, but these spells help your character perform better.
