How to Make a Farm Game

While farm titles have never been the most popular gaming sub-genre, ever since Natsume released the first entry in its popular "Harvest Moon" series in 1997, a small niche for them has existed in the U.S. gaming market. If you want to create your own farm game, you will have to learn a programming language or make use of game creation software. You will also have to find or create graphics, sound effects and music for your farm game. Unless you intend to pay their creators, any images, sound effects or music you find must be royalty free.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn a programming language. Examples of programming languages that facilitate game creation include XNA and C#. Works such as Joseph Albahari's "C# 4.0 in a Nutshell" and Aaron Reed's "Learning XNA 4.0: Game Development for the PC, Xbox 360, and Windows Phone 7" can help put you on the fast track to creating your own farm game. If you do not have time or do not want to learn to program, download Game Maker. Game Maker is a point and click game creation utility. You do not need to learn a programming language to create your own farm title using Game Maker.

    • 2

Decide what tasks you would like players to perform in your farm game and begin programming or creating it. Will your game simulate the experience of running a low-tech, hardscrabble farm like in Natsume's "Harvest Moon" titles, or will you instead allow players to operate tractors, combines and other pieces of heavy farm equipment? What you decide will determine what type of game you create.

Create graphics for your game. What software you use to create graphics depends upon how complex your game is. For a simple point and click simulation title, you may use Windows' native Paint program or another basic graphics editing program. If you intend to make an ambitious 3-D world for your farm game, however, you should download software such as Anim8or or Art-O-Matic. Both of these programs allow you to create professional looking 3-D graphics even if you lack previous 3-D modelling experience.

Create or find sound effects for your farm game. Purchase a portable sound recorder or use your laptop or cellphone and travel to a farm. Record sounds of animals and machinery. If you do not want to record your own effects, search online for royalty free sound effects or purchase sound effects from websites that offer them for sale.

Compose music to accompany your game or find royalty free arrangements of existing music. Music sequencing programs such as Presto allow you to create your own MIDI files. You can use music sequencing programs to compose original music for your game or arrange an existing royalty free piece of music.
