Gather wood to make a crafting table and also a wooden pick axe. Use the axe to gather stone. Use the stone and wood to create a pick axe. Make fence pieces using wood and build a furnace out of stone. Gather more wood and stone as you go to have enough material to create your tools.
Dig into the ground to find iron ore. Put the ore in the furnace and smelt it by also placing wood in the furnace. Use the smelted iron to make stronger pick axes and buckets. Make as many buckets and pick axes as you can with your material.
Left-click on the ground with your pick axe selected to dig into the ground around your fortress. Create a moat that is four squares wide and as deep as you want. Monsters can't jump the distance and spiders cannot climb it. Cut it around the perimeter of your fortress.
Place your fences along the edge closest to your fortress. This will make sure you don't fall into the moat and get killed by accident. Build a stone bridge across the moat using stone blocks, place fences along its sides and doors at either end to keep monsters out.
Pick a spot away from your home and dig down into the Earth as far as you can go. Make sure you place torches as you go down. Take a sword to fight off monsters. Keep going down until you find lava.
Collect the lava in your iron buckets and take it back to your moat. Throw the lava in your moat to spread it. Place the lava in different places throughout the moat to fill the bottom.
Continue collecting lava and pouring it into the moat until it is filled with lava. Monsters will attempt to jump the moat, fall in and will be burned up by the lava when they land.
