Low Level Paladin Tanking Guide

Paladins are a versatile class -- they can heal, deal damage or act as tanks. As tanks, paladins use holy power to generate threat and help kill enemies. Low level paladins won't have as many spells available to generate threat, but they can increase their threat by wearing the right gear, casting spells and equipping the right weapon.

Gear
- Low level tankers should equip mail gear containing the primary tanking statistics: strength or stamina. Strength increases your threat and blocking abilities, whereas stamina increases your health. Having more health allows tanks to take more damage from enemies without dying. Paladins should also equip gear that boosts other tanking statistics, such as defense, parry, block or dodge. Stay away from gear containing intellect, spirit or agility statistics -- these statistics are used by DPS or healing classes.
Spells
- To keep monsters focused on attacking you, cast spells that generate threat. Righteous Fury, which paladins learn at level 16, increases your threat caused by holy spells by 80 percent, according to WoWWiki.com. The spell does not expire unless you die, so cast it only if the spell isn't active on you. To reduce enemy damage, cast the Devotion Aura spell. This increases the tank's armor, as well as the armor of anybody in the tank's group.
Attacking Mobs
- Depending on the size of the enemy group, or mob, paladins should cast different spells to get the enemies' attention. For groups containing only one enemy, cast the Hand of Reckoning spell on the enemy. This spell increases your threat with one enemy. If there is more than one enemy present, cast the Righteous Defense spell instead. This spell increases your threat level with multiple enemies. Once you reach level 20, cast the Consecration spell right after the Righteous Defense spell. This spell also helps generate threat with multiple enemies.
Weapon
- Although paladins can equip two-handed weapons, they should not. Equipping two-handed weapons prevents paladins from equipping shields, which provide additional defense against monsters while blocking incoming attacks. For weapons, paladins can choose from swords, axes or maces. The type of weapon you choose does not matter. Instead, look for weapons containing tanking statistics, such as stamina, strength, dodge, block or parry. Avoid weapons with intellect, spirit or agility statistics. Look for these same statistics on shields.
