How to Do a Vertical Launch With the Atlantis Space Shuttle on FSX

Microsoft Flight Simulator X, or FSX, is a 2006 flight simulator game for the PC where players are able to take control of various aircraft. The aircraft designs are all based on real world planes, and the controls also attempt to simulate the real experience. Several mods allow users to play around with more exotic craft such as the Atlantis Space Shuttle. It is even possible to do a vertical launch with the space shuttle. To do so, you have to change the angle of the shuttle manually before taking off.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the game and select the Space Shuttle Atlantis as your craft. Press the "Y" button on your keyboard to enter "Slew" mode. This mode is used to reposition your craft without actually flying it.

    • 2

Press "Q" on your keyboard to move your shuttle slowly upward until it is in the correct vertical position. Use the "F3" key to move it up slowly or "F4" if you want to move it up quickly. Press "A" to move the shuttle down slowly if you moved it too far up.

    • 3

Press "F3" on your keyboard or "9" on the numerical keypad to increase the throttle to 25 percent. Press "Y" once the throttle is at the desired setting to disengage Slew mode.

    • 4

Continue increasing the throttle until you reach one hundred percent after you have disengaged Slew mode. Use the "F3" or "9" keys to increase the throttle slowly and avoid pressing "F4," which automatically sets the throttle to "Full."

    • 5

Hold down the "Shift" plus "E" keys and then press "2" to detach the rocket booster situated on the sides of the shuttle. Do the same but press "3" to detach the large fuel tank below the shuttle. Do this at any time after the shuttle is airborne.
