Building the Trap
Build a floor, a large, flat area that will serve as the foundation of your tower. It doesn't matter what it's made of, but cobblestone is a popular option.
Break a few blocks in your floor to create a series of ditches. They should all link up to a central ditch that ends outside the tower floor. This is where you'll go to pick up all the harvested items.
Craft a bucket, gather some water from a nearby lake or ocean and fill the ditches up with water. Now, you should have water flowing on the same level as the rest of your floor and it should lead into a small pool outside the tower.
Gather some lava. You can use the same bucket as before, but to find lava, you'll have to dig deep underground. Place the lava above your pool, so that anything that enters the water ditches will be pushed into it.
Building the Tower
Construct walls around your floor. You can go as high as you want to, but don't place any torche,s because it needs to be dark for monster to spawn. Don't block off the water flow into your pool.
Build levels in your tower. The more levels you have, the more monsters will spawn. Be sure to make holes in the floor which lead directly down to your water ditches. Monsters will fall in the holes and land in the water.
Build a ceiling for your tower. This will seal off every bit of light inside the tower and the monsters will start spawning when you're far enough away.
Retrieve your harvested items at your water pool.
