How to Edit MOTD CSS

Editing the default Message of The Day (MOTD) file on your "Counter-Strike: Source," or "CSS,' server allows you to display a customized welcome message to the players who connect to it. When connecting to a "Counter-Strike: Source" server, the first thing that players see is the MOTD screen, which, by default, welcomes them to the server. It is, however, possible to edit that screen to, for example, give players the names of the server admins or remind them of the server's rules. You can edit the MOTD file on your "Counter-Strike: Source" server by using Notepad, the Windows text editor.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect to your server by using either a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client or by using a remote desktop connection. If you are hosting the server on your own computer, simply move onto the next step.

    • 2

Navigate to the folder that contains the Source Dedicated Server (SRCDS) files on your server, open the "cstrike" folder inside it and double-click on "motd.txt" to automatically open it in Notepad. On most servers, the SRCDS files are inside the "C:\srcds" folder.

    • 3

Delete the text that is between the <pre> and </pre> tags. Replace that text with the message you would like your server to display to users. You can further customize your MOTD by using standard HyperText Markup Language (HTML) tags, such as "<center> </center>" to center it, "
" to force a line break or "<font size="X"></font>" to edit the font size. For that last tag, replace "X" with the actual size you want to use.

    • 4

Click on "File" and select "Save" to save the file. Then restart your server by typing "exit" in the console window and double-clicking on the "Source Dedicated Server" shortcut on your server's desktop.
