How to Put Games on Mame

MAME is an emulator application that stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. It plays arcade games recreated on a computer, called ROMs. MAME comes in two main versions, including a DOS-based version that you launch from a command prompt and a 32-bit Windows version called MAME32. You download MAME games from the Internet for both versions in the same way, but how you load and play games in each version differs between the two.

Instructions

  1. MAME

    • 1

Open a Web browser, and visit the MAME ROM download page. Click on one of the free games available for download, and save it to the "roms" folder in your MAME installation folder. For example, if you installed MAME at c:\MAME, save the game in the c:\MAME\roms\ path. Do not unzip the file.

    • 2

Click the "Start" button, then insert the cursor in the search box. Type "cmd," and press "Enter" to open the command prompt.

    • 3

Navigate the command prompt to the MAME. For example, type "cd .." to go back a folder in the prompt or "cd Program Files" to move into the "Program Files" folder. For example, if you installed MAME at c:\MAME, change the directory until the command prompt reflects this location.

    • 4

Type "mame gamename," and press "Enter," but replace "gamename" with the name of the game you downloaded. For example, if you downloaded Star Fire, type "mame starfire," and press "Enter" to launch the game.
