How Do I Create My Own Art for Civilization III?

Sid Meier's "Civilization III" is popular among game modding enthusiasts due to the ease with which you can change the game's art and other resources. Altering the graphics to suit your fancy requires nothing more than a good image editing program and a little artistic talent.

Instructions

    • 1

Copy the default scenario folder found under "C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Scenarios" on your hard drive and rename it to something like "My Scenario."

    • 2

Open the new "My Scenario" folder and click on the "Art" folder. The game graphics are stored in PCX images in subfolders, each named after its contents. Choose a folder from within here and decide which PCX image to edit.

    • 3

Open the PCX file in an image editor such as Photoshop or GIMP. Make whatever changes you desire, using hot pink to indicate transparent areas of your image. Save the image and close it.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3, editing as many of the game's graphics as you desire. You can just make a few small changes to a particular unit or terrain type as a test project, completely overhaul "Civilization III" art with your own graphics, or anything in between.

    • 5

Start "Civilization III" and click "Load Scenario" on the main menu. Select "My Scenario" to see your modified graphics.
