How to Fix Intel Processors to Work With Fallout 3

Although "Fallout 3" was created with multi-core processors in mind, including Intel's i3, i5 and i7 series, various bugs and glitches can cause the game to freeze up and crash. This causes players to become frustrated when their gaming experience is interrupted. However, users can make a slight change to the game's "INI" file to "lock in" the number of cores that are used for processing the game's engine. This can help lessen or eliminate freezes and crashes when playing the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the "Fallout 3" folder by selecting "My Documents," "My Games" and "Fallout3." Locate the "fallout.ini" file within the folder.

    • 2

Open "fallout.ini" with a text editor. Locate the line "bUseThreadedAI=0" and change the numerical value to "1." Create another line and enter "iNumHWThreads=2." This value will cause the game to use only two processor cores, preventing the game from freezing.

    • 3

Click "File," and then click "Save" to save your changes. Open the game and test the new settings by playing through the game. If the game still freezes, press "Ctrl + Alt + Del" to kill the game process and make sure the values within "fallout.ini" were entered correctly.
