How to Use a USB Xbox Dance Pad in StepMania

"StepMania" is a downloadable dancing game almost identical to "Dance Dance Revolution." The game runs on most operating systems and works with most USB dance pads, including Xbox dance pads. Map the buttons on the dance pad to functions in the game, using the mapping screen included with "Stepmania." Before mapping the buttons, test to see if your computer reads the dance pad properly.

Instructions

  Plug the dance pad into a USB port on the computer. A box should pop up saying the computer detects new hardware.

  Click "Start" and type "game controllers" into the search box. Click "Set up USB game controllers."

  Click once on the name of the USB dance pad, and then click "Properties." A test screen will appear. Press each button on the dance pad to see if a light blinks on the test screen. If a button does not light up, the dance pad will not work with "Stepmania." If every button did light up, map the buttons to "Stepmania."

  Load "Stepmania." Press "Enter" to get to the menu screen. Scroll down using the computer keyboard arrow keys and highlight "Options." Press "Enter." Scroll down to "Config Key/Joy Mappings" and press "Enter."

  Step on the arrow on the dance pad that matches the function on the mapping screen. The first button is "Left," so step on the left arrow on the dance pad. Scroll down to the next button on the screen, using the computer arrow keys. Step on the right arrow on the dance pad, because that button is for "Right" on the mapping screen. Continue to scroll down to each button, and step on the corresponding button on the dance pad.

  Press "Esc" twice, to return to the main menu screen.
