"Challenge" Mode
The single-player "Challenge" mode gives the player a fixed quota of deer to shoot before the clock stops. The difficulty curve is simple: As the player goes up the levels, the quota increases while the time to shoot gets shorter. "Deer Drive" offers more than 33 stages featuring different game animals. In general, targets with a bigger set of antlers give out higher scores, although extra points and bonus power-ups are earned for trick shots. The player can also earn "Breath Control" for a series of well-executed kills. Acquiring Breath Control gives you better control of your gun. The maker of the game prides itself on emphasizing ethical hunting in gameplay, deducting 200 points for every doe that's shot.
"Competition" Mode
"Competition" mode involves two players shooting simultaneously, going head-to-head to see who shoots the most deer. Like the "Challenge" mode, this can go on for more than 33 levels of increasing difficulty, with grizzlies, moose and mountain lions popping up occasionally to charge the players. As players move up the levels, they earn and unlock extra tools to assist with their shooting. Examples of hunting accessories to unlock include polarized glasses, extended clips, quick shot and extra guns, such as a lever-action rifle and a 7 mm automatic.
"Party" Mode
"Party" mode allows as many as four players to shoot at the same time, also in a head-to-head competition. This mode offers the "Challenge" and "Competition" modes' best features while adding a few extras. Players can win trick attacks to use against their opponents and increase their chances of winning. Examples of trick attacks include the "In Your Face," the "Screen Shake" and the "Headstand." "In Your Face" blocks your opponent's view, the "Screen Shake" shakes the opponent's screen, and the "Headstand" turns your opponent's screen upside down.
Game Consoles
SCS Software, a simulation games developer and the maker of "Deer Drive," originally intended the latter as a 3-D action game for PCs; however, versions for other video game consoles such as Nintendo's Wii and DS have since been released. "Deer Drive" is optimized for compatibility with the Wii Remote and other accessories, such as the Wii Zapper.
