How to DPS With a Mage in World of Warcraft

In "World of Warcraft," mages are one of the most powerful spell-casting classes in the game. They are able to wield fire, ice and arcane magic to inflict devastating amounts of damage to their foes from a distance. They are a cloth-wearing class and are especially vulnerable to damage, so it is very important for mages to know how to fight in a way that will keep them out of harm's way so that they can assist their group as effectively as possible.

Instructions

  1. Arcane Mages

    • 1

Cast Mage Armor and Arcane Brilliance on yourself.

    • 2

Cast Flame Orb at the start of a fight. This will create a large ball of fire that will travel in the direction in which it is cast, dealing damage to whatever it encounters. It will provide an extra boost of damage without any real effort. Recast this spell whenever it is off cooldown.

    • 3

Cast Arcane Blast until you have lost about 12 percent of your mana and then use a Mana Gem to restore it and give yourself a small spell power boost.

    • 4

Cast Arcane Blast repeatedly until you are just under 30 percent of your total mana. The damage of Arcane Blast increases as you cast it but so too does the mana cost, so after four or five times your mana will fall very quickly. This is a good opportunity to use trinkets and other damage-increasing abilities like Arcane Power.

    • 5

Use Evocation to quickly return to full mana. Cast Arcane Blast three or four times in a row followed by Arcane Missiles. Repeat this pattern until Evocation is almost off cooldown.

    • 6

Repeat Step 3 when Evocation is about to come off cooldown to unleash another massive burst of damage.

    • 7

Cast your Mage Ward spell whenever your are about to take damage. Not only will this protect you against incoming damage but it will also grant you a small spell power increase.

    Fire Mages

    • 8

Cast Molten Armor and Arcane Brilliance on yourself.

    • 9

Cast Living Bomb on your target. This spell deals fire damage over time and a massive burst of damage at the end of its duration. Keep this spell active on your target at all times but do not recast it before it wears off so that the final explosion will still occur.

    • 10

Cast Flame Orb whenever it is off cooldown. This spell is even more powerful for fire mages than it is for arcane mages.

    • 11

Cast Pyroblast whenever your Hot Streak talent takes effect. This has a chance to happen any time you get a critical strike with your fire spells and is guaranteed to happen if you get two critical strikes in a row. Pyroblast will deal a large amount of damage instantly and more damage over time.

    • 12

Use your Combustion spell when your target has all three of your damage-over-time effects, including Impact, which is triggered from any critical strike spell. This spell will combine all damage-over-time effects on the target into a new effect, effectively doubling your periodic damage for a short duration.

    • 13

Cast Fireball repeatedly when all the above steps are completed. Use Scorch, instead, if you are low on mana.

    Frost Mages

    • 14

Cast Molten Armor and Arcane Brilliance on yourself. You can switch to Mage Armor if you start to run low on mana.

    • 15

Cast your Frostfire Orb at the start of the fight. This spell is very similar to Flame Orb but it will also decrease your target's movement speed. Recast it whenever it is off cooldown.

    • 16

Cast your Deep Freeze spell any time your Fingers of Frost effect is active, which has a chance to happen every time you cast your main frost abilities.

    • 17

Use your Frostfire Bolt whenever you have both Fingers of Frost and Brain Freeze active. Brain Freeze is also activated by casting frost spells but has a smaller chance to happen than does Fingers of Frost.

    • 18

Use your pet's Freeze ability whenever it is not on cooldown and when you do not have Fingers of Frost. This will instantly generate two stacks of Fingers of Frost.

    • 19

Cast your Frostbolt spell when all of the above spells are on cooldown.
