How to Open World of Warcraft MPQ Files

Blizzard Entertainment Systems uses the MPQ file type to compress graphics, videos and information about levels in many of their games, including "World of Warcraft." It allows compression and encryption techniques to be embedded in the file. Compression is ideal to reduce file size on the disc and on the computer after installation. Developers and individuals are often interested in how games and their programming functions can use one of the open-source programs available to view and edit MPQ files.

MPQ Draft

  Download the MPQ Draft archive, then double-click it to open the archive contents.

  Double-click "MPQDraft.exe" to open the program.

  Click "Load MPQ Patch," then select "World of Warcraft" from the available games listing on your computer.

  Click "Next," then select the MPQ file you want to open.
MPQ Extractor 1.0

  Download MPQ Extractor 1.0, then double-click it to open the archive.

  Click "Extract" to extract the contents of the archive to a new folder, giving you access to them.

  Double-click "MPQ Extractor" to open the program.
