Go talk to the shopkeeper after you have spoken with Stan about buying a ship. You need credit to buy one. Stan tells you the shopkeeper is the only local who offers credit. If you have made it this far in the game, you will know where the shopkeeper's store is found in the town on Scumm Island. Go there now.
Tell the shopkeeper you need credit to buy a ship. He will ask whether you are employed. Tell him you have a job. The shopkeeper will take your word for it and open the safe to retrieve the note of credit.
Watch carefully as the shopkeeper opens the safe. This is the only way to get the combination. The shopkeeper will turn the dial left or right in a randomized pattern. You must count each movement of the dial, keeping track of which direction he has turned it each time.
Write down the turns for reference. For example, if the shopkeeper turns the dial left four times, right once, left twice and right twice, write "L4, R1, L2 and R2." Once he has retrieved the note of credit from the safe, the shopkeeper will ask you what sort of job you have. Tell him you do not have a job after all. He will return the note to the safe, giving you another opportunity to observe the combination.
Tell the shopkeeper you are looking for the Sword Master. He will leave the store to go look for her. Walk up the stairs to the safe.
Enter the combination you observed earlier. The "Push" command will turn the dial right, or clockwise, and the "Pull" command will turn it left, or counterclockwise. Push and pull the dial to enter the combination. If you do this correctly, the safe will open. If not, the safe will not open and the storekeeper will return.
Tell the shopkeeper that you are looking for the Sword Master again if you made a mistake with the combination. He will leave again, giving you another opportunity to open the safe. You can do this as often as necessary until the safe is opened.
