How to Stop Colors in Fallout

Fallout, a popular post-apocalyptic RPG made in the 90s, was a classic game that many still enjoy playing today. However, Windows has started dropping compatibility with outdated software, so the graphics routine "Direct Draw" is being phased out. This causes many glitches on old games ranging from rainbow-colored graphics to not running at all. Fallout I &II have the rainbow glitch, so the dark and dreary landscape is replaced with random splotches of red and green. Fortunately, this is the easiest problem to fix.

Instructions

  1. Stopping Windows Explorer

    • 1

Go to the directory where you want your launcher to be, such as the desktop.

    • 2

Open Notepad. Click on "File" in the left side of the menu at the top of the window and select "Save As." A new window will open. Type in "fallout.bat" in the file name form. Click "Save."

    • 3

Paste these lines below into the empty notepad file. Save the file by clicking on "File" in the menu and "Save." Close the file by clicking on the small "X" icon at the top right corner of the window.

      taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe

      C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout\fallout.exe

      Start explorer.exe

    • 4

Double-click the file to open again. It will exit Windows Explorer, which is the window manager that is causing the glitch, and start Fallout. When you exit your game, it will automatically restart Explorer.
