SecuROM is a controversial Digital Rights Management program that is often attached to certain types of programs, usually games and other expensive software suites, like Adobe Photoshop. One of the least popular features was the idea that SecuROM would check every 10 days to see if a copy of Mass Effect was legitimate, making the game inoperable over time without an internet connection. At the height of consumer outcry against the insidious and faulty anti-piracy features, SecuROM decided to issue a removal tool for older SecuROM activated programs. Current versions of Mass Effect available for download completely omit SecuROM.
