How to Beat Mass Carries in Starcraft II

The Carrier is one of the strongest Protoss air units in "Starcraft II," especially if your opponent mass-produces them before shipping them out. Whether you're playing as Zerg, Protoss or Terran, you have a couple of options for taking them out without suffering heavy losses at your base. Once you know what works best for your race as a countermeasure against them, you will be able prepare yourself with the necessary units whenever you fight a Protoss player and avoid losing against this tactic.

Instructions

  1. Zerg Strategy

    • 1

Create as many Corruptors as you can. These are available once you build a Spire on your Creep. Click the Larvae around your base to bring up a menu and then click the Corruptor picture to have the Larvae morph.

    • 2

Create Hydralisks. You must build a Hydralisk Den before you can create Hydralisks from your Larvae at the base. You should buy the Grooved Spines upgrade at the Hydralisk Den because it increases the Hydralisk attack range, which is useful against airborne units.

    • 3

Send the squads of Hydralisks and Corruptors at the mass Carriers all at once. Have the Hydralisks focus on the Interceptors while you send Corruptors after the actual Carriers. This is the most effective strategy with these two units because Hydralisks may not be able to reach the Carriers, even with the Grooved Spines upgrade.

    Protoss Strategy

    • 4

Send in your own Carriers to defend your base. If you don't already have a fleet of Carriers on hand, don't bother building them if you're already getting attacked. They take too long to build, and your enemy will simply destroy them one by one as they are produced, while simultaneously destroying your base.

    • 5

Produce Stalkers. You must have a Gateway and the Cybernetics Core before you can create Stalkers. These units have bonus damage against armored units, which is helpful against the Carriers. Despite this bonus, Stalkers are similar to the Corruptors in that you must create a massive fleet of them to be effective.

    • 6

Summon Void Ray units from the Stargate. These units are especially effective against Carriers if you have them focus their fire on one carrier at a time. Send these units along with a fleet of Stalkers led by your Carriers, if you already had them, and overwhelm the enemy.

    Terran Strategy

    • 7

Build Vikings. You must have a Starport before Vikings become available. You will train the Vikings at a Starpot. Have your Vikings transform into Fighter Mode as they are produced. This mode allows them to fight against the Carriers. Build as many of these units as you can.

    • 8

Build Thor units. You must have an Armory and a Factory with a Tech Lab attached to it before you can build these units. Thors have surface-to-air missiles that are quite strong, especially if you have two or three attacking the same Carrier at once.

    • 9

Train Marines at the Barracks. Although marines are fairly weak against Carriers, they can attack air units, and they're cheap and quick to train. Marines also make good distraction tools. Send them in just before you ship out the larger Thors and Vikings so that the Carriers target them first. While the Carriers are distracted with the Marines, land a few extra blows, in addition to the damage done by the Marines, to gain an edge.
