How to Get Twinsen's Odyssey to Work on Windows XP

Like many older games, Twinsen's Odyssey -- designed for DOS and Windows 95 -- often has trouble running on newer systems. In some cases, Windows XP's built-in Compatibility Mode feature will be sufficient to get Twinsen's Odyssey working, but other users may experience graphics and sound problems -- often fixable with a patch and the VDMSound hardware emulator, respectively.

  Insert the Twinsen's Odyssey CD. Click "Install" on the splash screen that appears to begin the installation process. If no splash screen appears, double-click "My Computer," then your CD drive, then the "Win 95" folder, and then the installation file.

  Follow the on-screen installation instructions. Do not install DirectX 3.0 if prompted. Select the 145MB installation when the program presents you with a list of options. Note the location to which the game is installed.

  Double-click "My Computer" and navigate to the Twinsen's Odyssey installation directory. Right-click "twinsen.exe," and select "Properties." Click the "Compatibility" tab and select "Windows 95" from the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" drop-down menu. Click "OK."

  Double-click "twinsen.exe" to run the game. If everything works, you are finished. If the game's graphics are garbled or otherwise damaged, or if the sound doesn't work, continue to Step 5.

  Fix garbled graphics by applying a small patch. Download the ZIP file from http://forum.magicball.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=464&d=1015692945. Double-click to open it and drag its contents into the Twinsen's Odyssey directory. Double-click "patch.exe" to apply the patch.

  Fix garbled or nonworking sound using the VDMSound hardware emulator. Download the ZIP file at http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/. Double-click it to open it, then double-click the executable inside. Follow the on-screen instructions to install VDMSound. Once it's installed, right-click "setsound.bat" in the Twinsen's Odyssey directory and click "Run with VDMS." Follow the instructions to set up the sound, then right-click "twinsen.exe" and run that with VDMS as well.
