Trainers
Lockpicking must be learned from a non-player character (NPC) who is a rogue trainer level 20 or above. There are 15 alliance trainers and nine horde trainers at these levels. There are four neutral trainers that either alliance or horde members can learn from. Pick one trainer and use him repeatedly. It may be useful to pick a trainer in a city players return to often for supplies, healing or quests.
Gear
All professions benefit from some type of additional gear. Lockpickers should purchase "Dark Leather Gloves" created by leather workers. Players will need eight pieces of medium leather, two lucky charms, one ball of fine thread and one bottle of grey dye. These items are given to a leather worker, level 120 or above, and the gloves are created. These gloves increase lockpicking skill by five, reduce the chance of a lockpicking attempt failing and can be used to pick locks out of the player's skill set.
Types of Locks
There are several items a rogue lockpick can open. Junkboxes are often dropped by mobs of different levels. The higher the mob level, the rarer the junkbox. The best junkbox available is the Flame-Scarred Junkbox containing either a Rogue's Draught, trash or a rare, uncut gem. Lockboxes are also dropped by mobs and can be sold at auction. Locked chests are found through fishing and often contain practical items such as wool or leather. Locked treasure chests can only be opened by lockpickers with a skill of 25 or above. Treasure chests are found in both horde and alliance areas and contain gold. Lockpickers can open 16 different locked doors. The simplest door are the gates at the Deadmines that only require a level-one lockpick. All other doors require levels above 150.
Lockpicking Etiquette
A player who needs to unlock a chest, box or door can enlist the help of a lockpick. It is generally best to ask a fellow guild member or friend with lockpicking ability before asking a stranger. If a lockpick accepts the player's request for help, he will typically unlock the item for free, but the player should tip. If the lockpick requests to be paid for his service, a fee should be determined beforehand.
