Approach a tree in the world and line up the crosshairs on your screen to chop it with your hand. Repeat until a block of wood falls off the tree. Repeat this process to gather a lot of wood. You need at least 20 units.
Open your Inventory by pressing the "E" key. There is a separate, two-by-two grid. Drag and drop the wood blocks into the four slots in this screen. You will see wooden planks appear next to the arrow, in the results window. Click to turn the wood blocks into wood planks. Turn all your blocks into planks.
Place four planks on the squares to make a crafting bench. You only need one crafting bench. Place this in the hotkey bar at the bottom of your screen, the row at the bottom of the inventory.
Make a vertical row of planks in the crafting window -- one on top, one below. This will result in sticks. Make roughly three-quarters of your planks into sticks.
Open your crafting bench by placing it on the ground and hitting it with your fist, as you did with the tree.
Place two sticks in the crafting square, one above the other. Place a wooden plank at the top of this piece. In the results screen, you will see a shovel icon. Click and drag that shovel down to a hotkey slot and close the inventory.
Press the numbered key linked to the shovel hotkey slot. The shovel will appear in your hand. Aim your cursor at a sand block and click to dig down. Repeat to dig.
